Who We Are
The Initiative for Human Development (i4HD) is a Somali non-profit organization committed to improving the well-being and resilience of vulnerable communities through integrated programs in health, education, and social protection.
Somalia has endured decades of conflict, climate shocks, and fragile institutions, leaving millions of people without access to essential services. Many communities still face limited access to healthcare, low educational attainment, and widespread poverty — challenges that are deeply interconnected and require an integrated, long-term response.
i4HD was founded to address these challenges through community-driven, evidence-based development programs that strengthen human capital and promote inclusive growth. We work closely with communities, local authorities, and development partners to design programs that deliver sustainable improvements — not just in individual outcomes, but in the systems and institutions that communities depend on.
As a locally rooted organization, i4HD brings deep contextual understanding of Somalia's complex political, social, and geographic landscape. We believe the most durable solutions are those designed alongside the communities they serve — solutions that build capacity, promote ownership, and outlast the project cycle.
Vision and Mission
Development Context
Somalia faces significant human development challenges shaped by decades of instability, displacement, and recurring climate crises. Progress has been made, but the gap between Somalia and global development benchmarks remains wide — and for millions of people, the consequences are immediate and severe.
A severe shortage of skilled health workers, including the midwives needed to support safe childbirth, compounds the structural weaknesses in Somalia's health system. In education, low enrollment and poor learning outcomes leave the next generation poorly equipped for economic participation. Meanwhile, millions of households remain vulnerable due to displacement, poverty, and climate shocks.
Strengthening human development systems is therefore essential for Somalia's long-term stability and economic progress. i4HD focuses on interventions that improve access to essential services while strengthening local capacity to deliver sustainable solutions.
